Kandy was the capital city of the last pre-colonial kingdom of Sri Lanka from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. It is widely regarded among the Sinhalese, the country’s main ethnic group, as the last bastion of Sinhalese culture. Despite its historical and cultural significance among the Sinhalese, the presence of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha, at Sri Dalada Maligava, considered by the Buddhist as one of the most holiest shrines, , Kandy is regarded as one of the sacred cities for the Sinhala Buddhists.

In addition to the heritage values at national level, the Kandy is inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List making the city having ‘Outstanding Universal Value’ for all humanity. The ever increasing number of foreign tourists visiting Kandy, particularly the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple, further testifies the international significance of this City. The talk by Dr Nilan Cooray will discuss the importance of Kandy from an international heritage point of view, particularly its World Heritage Values. The talk will also focus the issues of, and threats against the sustenance of such World Heritage Values at Kandy.

Dr. Nilan Cooray is a chartered architect and an International heritage Conservation Specialist. He has 25 years of experience in managing and conserving Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage in various capacities including Direct Conservation and Director Development at the Central Cultural Fund. His doctoral thesis examines the 5th century landscape design of Sigiriya with particular emphasis on the design tools and techniques employed, and the design principles and rules applied by the designers at Sigiriya. He also served as the UNESCO’s international expert resource person to provide advice to Myanmar’s Department of Archaeology in preparing management plants for the World Heritage nomination of Pyu Ancient Cities in Myanmar.

English Vinglish is a memorable movie from India, which combines linguistics, domesticity, multi-culturalism, with delightful ease. It stars one of the greatest actresses of the country, Sridevi, known for her superior dancing and dramatic skills, who acted in more than 200 films.

‘English Vinglish’ centers around Shashi, a housewife and home-maker who is happy looking after her family, and making ‘laddus’ (Indian traditional sweets). She is not too bothered about her lack of English-speaking skills, inspite of the digs her husband and family make about that.

Things change, when she goes to New York, to help in the marriage of her niece, and finds herself in many embarrassing situations, at not knowing the English language. That’s when she decides to enroll for a short English-speaking course in the city. Shashi meets a bunch of lively, multi-racial personalities, including a Pakistani cab-driver, Mexican nanny, closeted African, and French man who starts getting attracted to her. They love her innocent, effervescent personality, and have lots of fun together.

She is confused by the French man’s attentions, though it raises her self-worth. That’s when her family joins her in New York for the wedding. They are surprised by Shashi’s newly acquired English-language skills, and even more, by her impressive ‘English’ toast to the wedding-couple. They soon realize that they had judged her unfairly. But Shashi’s self-confidence has been totally boosted.

Don’t miss a scintillating Indian comedy, starring one of the greatest actresses of the country and a delightful guest- appearance by the great actor Amitabh Bachchan.

The screening is organized by The Inner Wheel Club of Kandy on the eve of International Women’s Day 2020.

Duration: 134 min. Refreshments & Entrance for the Event: Rs. 350.00. Limited space hence reserve your place early.

In 1286 the commander of the Pāṇḍyan Army known as Ārya Cakravarti invaded the Dambadeniya Kingdom, killed the King Bhuvanekabāhu I (1275-86) and captured the Tooth Relic. King Parākramabāhu III (1286-91) personally went before the Pāṇḍyan king and brought back the Tooth Relic. He was the last king to reign in Polonnaruva and the Relics were kept there.

During the early years of Parākramabāhu IV (1325-33) there was an invasion. The invaders conquered the ancient capitals Anuradhapura and Poḷonnaruva, and proceeded towards the then capital city Kuruṇǟgala. However, at the south bank of the Maha Oya King Parākramabāhu IV launched a counter attack and appeared to have annihilated the invading army and pushed them back to the north.

If not for this battle Ceylon would have been again under the invaders for a few decades at least, similar to the Cōḷa invasion in the 10/11 centuries. As a result of this invasion a new city, now named as Kandy, was and also the Asgiri Vihāra came in to existence.

Prasad Fonseka is an independent researcher in History and Archaeology. His first book was ‘Kotte the Fortress’ which has given a brief history of the Kōṭṭe Kingdom and the description of ruins still exist. His second book, a new edition of the oldest Sri Lankan chronicle, Dīpavaṁsa in Sinhala was published a few weeks back.

Shades Shapes Signs: An Exhibition by Asela Abeywardena

Saturday, 16th March at 4 pm

Contact : 076 822 1572 or e mail atelier@escondite.lk.

Atelier Kandy is pleased to present ‘SHADES SHAPES SIGNS’, an Exhibition of Sculpture & Paintings by a prominent and emerging artist Asela Abeywardena. This exhibition will provide audiences with context for both the breadth and depth of Asela’s artwork by presenting a sampling of the different media in which she works.

Asela’s scope as an artist reaches into the disciplines of poetry, painting and sculpture. Significant exhibitions have been held in her honor at the International Art Centre, Dubai and at several prominent galleries in Sri Lanka.

‘Poetry is speaking art and art is silent poetry’ and most artworks are inspired by poetry. Henry Moore exclaimed “A sculptor is a person who is interested in the shape of things, a poet in words, a musician by sounds.”

To Asela, art is purely for expression: it is the way she clarifies her own thoughts and emotions. “When I take a lump of clay or a paint brush, what follows is an organic process. Most of the time there are words and images swimming in my head. They emerge as poetry, which would then become a painting or a sculpture or at times vice versa. Poetry is an integral aspect of my artistic process.”

The opening of the exhibition will be held on the Saturday, 16th March at 4 pm at Atelier Kandy. It will be an interesting evening as Asela, with an acclaimed poet Krisantha Sri Bhaggiyadatta would read some of their poetry on the opening night, as an initiative to explore the relationship between poetry and art.

Jazz…the sound that put New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz on the map. The popular Jazz outfit En Route will pay tribute to New Orleans jazz, with a distinct style of music at Atelier Kandy.Jazz was originally music for dancing, not listening, even though that is what modern jazz became in the 1950s and beyond. New Orleans jazz has a swinging, stomping, syncopated beat that makes you want to dance! It also has a simple melodic quality that, to some, sounds dated.

Dr Gananath Dasanayake, a well-known vocalist and saxophonist leads En Route. The Group performed to the fans of American popular music of the early and mid 20th century, live in concert, producing “The Great American Song Book’. The band also produced the much-acclaimed Tribute to Sinatra- celebrating 100 years of Frank Sinatra, in December 2015.

The Society for Creative Arts has organized ‘Jazz vibes New Orleans’ in aid of ‘Art Place’ a charity to assist artists of Kandy.
