Charity Book Drop

Contact : 081 220 8200 / 076 822 1572 or e mail atelier@escondite.lk.

“Art Place” the society for creative art is running a book donation drive to collect books for needy children in Kandy to empower underprivileged children with the gift of books, the knowledge to develop language skills, and the promise of literacy.

The aim is to inculcate a reading habit and appreciation of books among both children & adults. For children, reading is a great way to explore and learn about the world and improve one’s command of languages. It also broadens a child’s mind and imagination. This drive will give them an opportunity to receive better education, which would ultimately improve their lives and ensure a brighter future.

The donations will fulfill the requirements of libraries in underprivileged schools as well as to establish Community Libraries in the outskirts of Kandy.

Partnered by Rotaract Club of Kandy, it was the first time Atelier Kandy had embarked on such a programme, after the overwhelming response that greeted other charity project in the recent past.

You are invited to donate new or used books, in any language and suitable for any age group. We gratefully accept:
Hardcover and paperback books in good condition,
Early readers / children’s books,
Fiction, Non-fiction (biographies, memoirs, academic books, travelogues, self-help etc),
Poetry and literature, and
Bookshelves for storage purposes.

We cannot accept:
Damaged books with broken bindings, missing pages, soiled, musty, moldy, with smoke or water damage, or with excessive writing in the text,
Professional journals,
Pornographic materials or
Workbooks or study guides that are partially or wholly filled in.

If you are a professional, a student, a businessman, an organization or anyone with even a single book and you aren’t sure with what are you going to do with your old books, then simply take an effort to donate them to us. There are many people who would gladly use your used or new books, and benefit from it greatly.

Shades Shapes Signs: An Exhibition by Asela Abeywardena

Saturday, 16th March at 4 pm

Contact : 076 822 1572 or e mail atelier@escondite.lk.

Atelier Kandy is pleased to present ‘SHADES SHAPES SIGNS’, an Exhibition of Sculpture & Paintings by a prominent and emerging artist Asela Abeywardena. This exhibition will provide audiences with context for both the breadth and depth of Asela’s artwork by presenting a sampling of the different media in which she works.

Asela’s scope as an artist reaches into the disciplines of poetry, painting and sculpture. Significant exhibitions have been held in her honor at the International Art Centre, Dubai and at several prominent galleries in Sri Lanka.

‘Poetry is speaking art and art is silent poetry’ and most artworks are inspired by poetry. Henry Moore exclaimed “A sculptor is a person who is interested in the shape of things, a poet in words, a musician by sounds.”

To Asela, art is purely for expression: it is the way she clarifies her own thoughts and emotions. “When I take a lump of clay or a paint brush, what follows is an organic process. Most of the time there are words and images swimming in my head. They emerge as poetry, which would then become a painting or a sculpture or at times vice versa. Poetry is an integral aspect of my artistic process.”

The opening of the exhibition will be held on the Saturday, 16th March at 4 pm at Atelier Kandy. It will be an interesting evening as Asela, with an acclaimed poet Krisantha Sri Bhaggiyadatta would read some of their poetry on the opening night, as an initiative to explore the relationship between poetry and art.

Jazz…the sound that put New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz on the map. The popular Jazz outfit En Route will pay tribute to New Orleans jazz, with a distinct style of music at Atelier Kandy.Jazz was originally music for dancing, not listening, even though that is what modern jazz became in the 1950s and beyond. New Orleans jazz has a swinging, stomping, syncopated beat that makes you want to dance! It also has a simple melodic quality that, to some, sounds dated.

Dr Gananath Dasanayake, a well-known vocalist and saxophonist leads En Route. The Group performed to the fans of American popular music of the early and mid 20th century, live in concert, producing “The Great American Song Book’. The band also produced the much-acclaimed Tribute to Sinatra- celebrating 100 years of Frank Sinatra, in December 2015.

The Society for Creative Arts has organized ‘Jazz vibes New Orleans’ in aid of ‘Art Place’ a charity to assist artists of Kandy.
